About This Event
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail 100s is a scenic ultra trail run along the historic Brisbane Valley Rail Trail with multiple ultra distances.
Course Description
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail 100s takes runners along the historic 161km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, a converted railway line that winds through the scenic countryside between Yarraman and Wulkuraka. The trail features a crushed gravel surface with gentle gradients, passing through charming rural townships, over heritage bridges, and across rolling farmland. Runners experience the beauty of the Brisbane Valley's pastoral landscape, with the longer ultra distances offering a true test of endurance across multiple days. The out-and-back or point-to-point courses provide excellent crew access at regular intervals, with well-stocked aid stations supporting ultra runners throughout their journey.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Yarraman is located approximately 200km northwest of Brisbane via the D'Aguilar Highway. Drive time is around 2.5 hours from Brisbane. The rail trail start point is well-signposted in Yarraman township. Parking is available at the trailhead and in town. Public transport options are limited to this rural area, so driving or carpooling is recommended. For multi-day ultra events, arrive the day before to collect race packs and attend the pre-race briefing.
Weather & What to Pack
June in South East Queensland brings mild winter conditions, ideal for ultra running. Expect daytime temperatures between 12-22°C, with cooler nights dropping to 5-10°C for overnight runners. The weather is generally dry with low humidity, though occasional cool fronts can bring rain. Dress in layers for temperature changes, especially for dawn and dusk running. Sun protection remains important during midday hours. Hydration needs are moderate, but don't underestimate fluid requirements for longer ultra distances.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail ideal for ultra running?
The converted railway line features gentle gradients with minimal elevation gain, a well-maintained crushed gravel surface, and excellent crew access at multiple road crossings. The scenic rural setting provides a peaceful atmosphere for long-distance running with regular township checkpoints.
Do I need a support crew for the ultra distances?
While aid stations are provided, a support crew is highly recommended for distances over 100km. The rail trail has numerous road crossings allowing crew access. Check the race guidelines for crew requirements and permitted support zones for your chosen distance.
What experience do I need for the longer ultra distances?
The 100 Miles and 360km events are extreme endurance challenges requiring extensive ultra running experience. Runners should have completed multiple 100km+ events and specific multi-day training. The half marathon and marathon distances are more accessible to those stepping up to trail ultras.
What facilities are available along the course?
The rail trail passes through several townships including Yarraman, Linville, Moore, Toogoolawah, and Esk, providing opportunities for resupply and facilities. Aid stations are positioned at strategic intervals with water, nutrition, and medical support. Specific aid station locations are provided in pre-race information.
Is the event held in winter - what should I wear?
June is Queensland winter, offering excellent running temperatures (12-22°C during the day). Bring layers for cool starts and evenings, including a light jacket and arm warmers. Overnight runners will need warmer gear and a headtorch. The gravel trail is suitable for road or trail running shoes.
