Event Details
About This Event
Australia's largest aquathon held on Australia Day at stunning Wollongong Harbour. Swim in the protected harbour then run the iconic Blue Mile. Distances for all ages and abilities, from kids to long-course competitors. Over 25 years of history.
Course Description
The Short Aqua — the event's most popular distance — begins with a single 400m lap in the sheltered waters of Wollongong Harbour before transitioning to a flat 3km out-and-back run along the spectacular Blue Mile foreshore to the Lagoon Restaurant and back. The Long Aqua extends the challenge to a 900m harbour swim followed by a 7km run along the same coastal path. The course is largely flat and fast, with ocean views throughout. Kids distances use shorter swim loops within the harbour. All courses are well-marked with professional water safety cover, course marshals, and on-course water stations.
Quick Facts
Getting There
Wollongong Harbour is on Cliff Road, Wollongong — approximately 1.5 hours south of Sydney via the M1 and Princes Motorway. Limited street parking is available near the harbour; arrive early as the area fills quickly on public holidays. Wollongong train station is about 1km from the start — trains run regularly from Sydney's Central Station. Race bib and chip collection is at the Old Court House, directly across the road from the harbour café.
Weather & What to Pack
Late January in Wollongong is peak summer — expect warm to hot conditions with temperatures typically ranging from 22°C to 28°C. The harbour location provides a coastal sea breeze, but humidity can be moderate. Apply sunscreen before the event, wear a hat to the venue, and bring extra water for after the race. The swim provides welcome relief from the heat. Light, moisture-wicking race kit is recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter as part of a team rather than doing both the swim and run myself?
Yes — all aquathon distances offer a tag-team (relay) option where one person swims and another runs. Team registrations close at 3pm the day before the event, but on-site team registration is available on race morning.
What does my entry fee include?
Entry includes your event swim cap, finisher medal, electronic timing chip and results, entry into spot prize draws, finish-line refreshments, and comprehensive on-course safety services. A mandatory Triathlon Australia one-day licence fee is included in the registration price.
Is the event suitable for children?
Absolutely. The Kids Aqua categories are designed specifically for younger participants: U10s complete a 120m swim and 2km run, while 10–13 year olds tackle a 200m swim and 2km run. Children can also compete in the Mini Aqua (ages 12+) or enter a Parent & Child team in the Short Aqua.
Where do I collect my race bib and timing chip?
Check-in is at the Old Court House, directly across the road from the harbour café. Fun Run and Long Aqua participants collect from 6:15am; Mini and Short Aqua from 7:45am; Kids Aqua from 8:00am. Have your registration confirmation ready.
What swimwear and gear do I need?
A swimsuit or triathlon suit is recommended. The event provides a swim cap. Wetsuits are permitted but check the official website for any water-temperature rules. You'll need running shoes for the run leg; a quick-release race belt is handy for team transitions. Leave valuables in your car as bag storage is limited.
