About This Event
12th edition of the marathon along the stunning Surf Coast Walk tracking from Torquay to Fairhaven. Can run Marathon solo or in a team of two. Presented by Brooks.
Course Description
The Surf Coast Trail Marathon follows the spectacular Surf Coast Walk from Torquay to Fairhaven, showcasing Victoria's most iconic coastal scenery. The marathon route traverses the legendary Bells Beach, climbs to the dramatic clifftops of Point Addis and Anglesea, and finishes at Split Point Lighthouse near Aireys Inlet. Despite the stunning wilderness setting, this is a relatively non-technical trail course with good footing and minimal elevation challenges, making it accessible to road runners whilst still offering experienced trail runners plenty of engaging twists and turns. The half marathon starts at Point Addis, whilst the new 8km route runs from Urquharts Beach to Fairhaven along sweet singletrack sections. The team relay option allows pairs to split the marathon distance roughly in half.
Quick Facts
Getting There
The race starts in Torquay, approximately one hour southwest of Melbourne via the M1 and Great Ocean Road. Parking is available near the start at Fishermans Beach, Torquay. Organised bus transfers run from Fairhaven SLSC to the start line from 6:30 AM, with return buses throughout the day. Half marathon runners are bussed to the Point Addis start. Arrive by 7:30 AM for marathon registration or 10:30 AM for the half marathon to allow time for bus transfers and pre-race briefings.
Weather & What to Pack
June in coastal Victoria brings cool winter conditions with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 10-14°C. Expect crisp mornings around 7-9°C at the 8:30 AM marathon start, warming slightly by the 11 AM half marathon. The Surf Coast can experience strong coastal winds and passing showers, though sunny breaks are common. Dress in layers with a long-sleeved technical top, light jacket, gloves, and beanie for the start. The non-technical trail means standard trail shoes with moderate grip are suitable. Pack waterproof gear and stay hydrated despite the cooler temperatures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run the marathon as a team?
Yes, the Teams of 2 option allows pairs to split the full marathon distance, with the first runner covering approximately half before tagging their teammate at the changeover point. This is particularly popular with parents managing family duties on race day.
What's included in my registration?
Entry includes race timing, finisher medal, post-race refreshments at Fairhaven SLSC, and organised bus transfers between start/finish locations. The 8km entry includes bus transfer. Registration opens Friday afternoon at the Salty Dog Cafe in Torquay, with race day registration also available.
Is this suitable for first-time trail runners?
Absolutely. The Surf Coast Walk is relatively non-technical compared to mountain trails, with good footing and no remote sections. Road runners will find it an accessible introduction to trail running, whilst the stunning coastal scenery makes it rewarding for experienced trail runners too.
What are the refund and transfer policies?
Refunds (less admin fee) are only available before midnight 23 May 2025. After this date, no refunds or transfers to future events are offered. However, you can transfer your entry to another person at any time. Pregnancy is the only exception considered for late refunds.
What happens after the race?
Presentations are held at 2:30 PM at Fairhaven SLSC. Buses return to Torquay at 1:30 PM, 3 PM, and 4 PM. From 6 PM, join fellow runners for post-race celebrations with music, food, and drinks at Aireys Pub (live music from 7 PM). Bookings for dinner are essential - call (03) 5289 6804 or book online.
